What makes it special

A chess role-playing game

New pieces with their own moves, which learn abilities with every level and grow stronger together as a covenant. A capture is not one move but a fight — and out of the rift come beasts that follow rules of their own.

Three heads from the game: the Jester, the Captain and the Amazon

New pieces, new moves

Beside the six classic pieces, 46 more heroes are waiting — and they move in ways no chess piece may. Four of them —

The Captain
The Chancellor
The Amazon
The Miller

CaptainGlides three squares straight, steps one diagonally.

ChancellorRook and knight in one piece.

AmazonQueen and knight at once.

MillerOne step or a short leap. Captured pawns bring gold.

And from the village, the workshop, the forest and the tournament — four of many more:

The Jester
The Smith
The Huntress
The Samurai

JesterSteps straight or leaps two diagonally. Swaps with a friendly piece.

SmithTwo sideways, one forward or back. Strikes without moving.

HuntressTwo diagonally, one straight. Stalks like a knight.

SamuraiFour straight, one diagonally. Blinks to a free square.

The cards are real ones from the game — the move grid shows where the piece can go. The abilities it can learn follow further down.

Covenants

Stronger together

Eighteen covenants bind together pieces that belong together. When every member of a covenant stands in your army, their shared power awakens — the sign on each card carries the colour of its covenant.

Tournament

Any of the four with a tournament comrade beside him strikes with one more attack.

Tides

The Captain moves through friendly pieces.

Village

Your pawns begin with one more life, and every one that survives the match earns 3 gold.

Three of eighteen: Shadow, Darkness, Kitchen, Cloister, Counting-house and the others are waiting in the game.

Abilities

Every piece keeps learning

With every level your pieces unlock abilities — some change how they move, others turn the tide once in battle. The first arts of every ladder even work in the campaign's chess games.

Guard step, the Bishop's ability: one extra square straight
Swap, the Jester's ability
Lightning bolt, the Warlock's ability
Double strike, the Captain's ability
Dragonfire, the Dragon's ability

The Bishop's guard step, the Jester's swap, the Warlock's lightning bolt, the Captain's double strike and dragonfire — real cards from the game. There are sixty.

More than classic chess

Field your own army

A Captain instead of a rook, a Hawk instead of a knight, a beast from the rift on the free square — every game starts with your formation. Defeated beasts can be recruited to your court for gold, and whoever wins a chapter brings its master to the queen's square.

A battle in the Kronland, chapter I: at the top the Jester's head above his army, at the bottom your army with Smith, Knight, Samurai, Queen, King, Huntress, Captain and Hawk — below it the battle bar with the Captain's abilities

Tap a piece and its abilities appear below — here the Captain against the Jester in the Kronland.

Four ways to play

The world

From the Kronland to the Endless Sea

Twelve lands on a painted world map — every chapter with its own landscape, its own board and its own master.

The Kronland on the painted world map of Gambit Rise — fields and castle, the Eichwald and the mountains behind: the start of twelve lands

Kronland, Kornmark, Eichwald — the beginning. Nine more lands still lie in darkness.

A classic chessboard in Gambit Rise after four moves — the same board and tournament pieces as in the game, the Kronland stretching to the horizon behind it

And if you just want chess

Classic chess by the full rules — castling, en passant, promotion — is here too: against the computer, online or two players on one device, any time in the quick game.

The Kronland: fields, villages and the castle of the Crown under a violet evening sky
Chapter I

Kronland

Over the Kronland the banners of an old victory still fly. People tell of a night when the earth shook and violet light swept across the fields. Since then a messenger of the Crown has come to the villages every year, and with him a pawn vanishes.

Great stories rarely begin with a pawn. This one does.
